Indicating Units
To suit Fire Service access requirements.

The control to have:
  • Evacuation Switch
  • Silencing Switch
  • Any other agreed controls.

Batteries must be housed in cabinets.
Manual Call Points
On escape routes and at main exit doors
No more than 30 metres apart
On each floor level
Clearly visible and 1.2 to 1.5mtrs high. 600mm clearance in all directions.
Where vandalism may occur they may be located where staff can oversee them.
External call points are only permitted where it is secure against unauthorised access.
Detectors
Heat detectors must be rated at least 15C above expected temperatures.
Smoke detectors may be replaced by heat or sprinklers to prevent false alarms:
  • Tops of stairways, lifts, ducts, skylights etc
  • Under canopies, balconies and building appendages.
  • Understair and cleaners cupboards.
  • Within 5 m of cooking equipment.
  • Bathrooms or where steam may be present
  • Toilets
  • Ceilings where access is difficult
  • Other areas where false alarms may occur

No substitution is allowed
  • Sleeping Areas
  • Escape routes from sleeping areas
  • Escape routes from crowd activity
  • Internal exitways to a building
Positioning and Location of Detectors
Shall be installed:
  • All areas of the building and accessible spaces.
  • Top of Stairwells, hoists, lifts and skylights used for ventilation.
  • Floor landings of all stairways.
  • Within 1.5m of a fire door that does not have detection on the other side.
  • Under decks, mezzanine floors and landings over 1.5mtrs wide.
  • Under canopies and balconies exceeding 1.5 m
  • Under appendages where combustible materials are stored or a vehicle can be stored.
  • Under duct hoods over cookers that exceed 1.5m
  • Within 500mm of an apex.
  • No closer than 1m from air conditioning delivery points.
  • Not less than 200mm from a wall.
  • Joists, Beams Purlins etc
  • Cleaners and under stairs cupboards
  • Wardrobes over 6 m³
  • Wardrobes less than 6 m³ that are not vented by an area greater than 0.2m³
  • Cupboards over 1.5m³ containing electrical switchboards or where electrical or gas appliances are used insitu.
  • Cupboards over 3 m³ unless vented at the top by an orifice greater than 0.2m

Partial coverage of a building is not permitted except the following spaces:
  • Concealed spaces that are fire isolated and don’t include Combustible materials.
  • Space below the lowest floor which has no access
  • Concealed spaces above ceilings less than 800m with fire resistant slabs above.
  • WC’s off a protected room where walls are not full height.
  • Adjacent Firecells.
  • Perforated ceilings where the detectors are fitted on the ceiling above.
  • Where sprinklers are fitted, heat detectors may be omitted.
Spacing
Heat detectors will be located in the best position for exposure to fires and hot gases.

Smoke detectors spaced as follows:
  • Not more than 10m apart
  • No further than 5m from a wall
  • No closer than 200mm to a wall
  • No point in a room is more than 7m to a detector
  • Within 500mm of an apex on a sloping ceiling of more than 5°

Smoke Beams
  • Normally parallel to the ceiling
  • Within 600mm of an apex

Indicators On detector or Remote Indication
LED's must be clearly visible under normal conditions
Other than analogue systems, concealed heads require remote indication.
